Cao Lau | Vietnam

Cao Lau | Vietnam

Cao Lau is the regional specialty of Hoi An and you can find it at every restaurant and street stall in the city.  Cao Lau, pronounced Cow Low, is made of specially “burnt-flavored” egg noodles topped with meats.  That makes it sound terrible, but it is a really delicious dish and typically the meat is a flavorful slice of pork.  I especially like the crispy little wonton crackers that are served on top of the noodles.  As I said you can find this dish anywhere, but the best place to eat it is at one of the street stalls that set up shop right on the river at night.  They have the best Cao Lau and the ambiance is second to none, right on the water with only a small lantern on the table making for a romantic dinner under $1.

Sounds like a place rather than dinner! Glad the dish of the town wasn’t snake. Although I have ordered that on purpose in Death Valley and lived to tell about it. Think I can find Cao Lao at a Vietnamese restaurant here?

LOCAVORista Reply:

Mom, not sure if you could find Cao Lau at home or not, it seems to be a specialty- we haven’t found it anywhere but Hoi An. You’ll have to check and keep us posted if you do find it at home.

Love Cao Lau and Hoi An! We had a favorite stall down by the river, and even took photos with the owners. Your blog is bringing back so many good memories, and getting me really excited for my own upcoming trip back!

Kate, the Cao Lau down by the river is the best! I have actually been craving it in Hue as the street food just isn’t as good as Hoi An.
