Fresh Beer | Vietnam

Fresh Beer | Vietnam

Bia Hoi (Vietnamese fresh beer) is micro-brewed in small batches and sold for roughly 10-15 cents a glass.  It is more widely found in northern Vietnam, but we had some in Ho Chi Minh City as well.  It is a little different each place you try it as each establishment brews it slightly differently.  Many places have just one keg of it and once it runs out your done for the evening, left to choose one of their more expensive bottled beers.

Bia Hơi dates back to the 1890s, after brewing was introduced by the French. Just one place, the Hommel brewery, brewed beer, but it was a small operation only able to produce 150 liters a day. The beer was also sold bottled, but it was so expensive that it was only for the wealthy people.

After the French left Vietnam in 1954, the Hommel brewery was renamed the Hanoi Brewery. But the refreshing carbonated beverage still took a while to become popular, until the brewery hit on the novel idea of producing an instant draught beer known as Bia Hơi, literally translated as “fresh beer”.

The locals still didn’t think much of the drink; they preferred the traditional Vietnamese rice wine. Then the government clamped down on home production of spirits, and people began to realize that the legal alternative, Bia Hơi, made a refreshing, low-alcohol summer drink.
