He Said/She Said: Favorite Photos of 2011

He Said/She Said: Favorite Photos of 2011

Of 29,000 photos taken through 13 countries in 2011, these are our personal favorites.  After forcing ourselves to pick favorites we are each publishing a separate Top 10 Photos of 2011 this week, see thinkCHUA’s Top 10 here, see LOCAVORista’s here.

Publishing our travel photos on LivingIF requires compromises.  Due to bandwidth availability in the places we visit every photo you see is just a fraction (1/8) of the actual detail.  The highest resolution photos we post are in our Photo Galleries (where you will find “Best Photos” from each country we’ve visited).  This week is different though, we’ve presented our favorite photos of the year in High Definition, thinkCHUA displayed his Top 10 Photos of 2011, below we are showing our favorite photo of 2011.  On Friday, LOCAVORista will present her Top 10 photos of 2011.

An orangutan mother and child swinging by for some milk.  At the Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Center near Kuching, Sarawak, several Orangutans have been forced into a small reserve due to deforestation.  They are provided food daily if they choose to visit during “meal time”, but many are able to survive off the jungle that has been saved for them.

Every time I see this photo I am amazed by the human-like characteristics of the orangutan.  Looking into their eyes you see recognition and feel as though you are looking a very hairy, flexible, person in the eyes.  The baby saw me watching while he was eating and paused, then reached out his food towards me in an unmistakable gesture of offering to share.

Picking a favorite photo from 2011 was next to impossible for me, but I kept coming back to this shot of a monk on U Bein bridge in Amarapura, Myanmar.  Myanmar was one of my favorite destinations of 2011 and the many monks throughout the country became a symbol of it’s heart and soul.  The people are so peaceful and friendly and their kindness and serenity has stayed with me throughout the trip making this picture one that I treasure as a representation of the Myanmar people.

The photos that both of us have taken in the last year remain my favorite souvenirs of the trip and provide a beautiful travelogue of 2011.  We captured many amazing moments and memories this past year. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to see so many incredible things from endangered species to solitary monks.  Our photos will continue to serve as a reminder of how we chased our dreams in 2011 and decided to live our biggest if… We look forward to what 2012 brings and what memories we will capture.

Make 2012 the year you take better photos.  To help you we’ve reviewed top cameras available today for much less than you’d expect.
