HE SAID…

Soaring peaks, mountain lakes and trails to yourself.  Finding such a place takes weeks of hiking in Nepal, not to mention the time to acclimatize and get over jet-lag.  Is it worth the effort to take spectacular shots?  Undoubtedly.  But between me and you, you can get similar views a lot easier in Huaraz, Peru.

Within minutes of Huaraz’s main plaza are dozens of alpine hikes through scenery available nowhere else outside the Himalayas.  Best of all, it requires days, not weeks, of hiking. Hikes as short as three days will take you through epic mountain landscapes.  Being cheaper to get to, less effort to great views, and jet-lag free for North Americans, it deserves a place on every nature photographer’s must-shoot list.

Best of all for photographers, the hikes around Huaraz allow you to camp anywhere.  You can pitch your tent next to night and early morning shots you want, allowing you to set your alarm a little later than on many of the world’s great hikes.

While Nepalese hiking is absolutely worth the time and effort, especially the vibrant village life, for those that want to take breathtaking photos on a lessor budget, Huaraz is the place to go.

SHE SAID…

The definition of pristine is Antarctica.  Arguably the best nature photography in the world.  However, in contrast to Huaraz, Peru it is not inexpensive or easy to travel there.  You are at the mercy of mother nature to get your shots, but when the weather cooperates it’s spectacular.

The landscape is reminiscent of the Himalayas- if they were flooded, you get soaring, snow-capped peaks reflected in mirror like glacial water.  The wildlife isn’t afraid of people, which allows you to sit and wait for the photo opportunity to come to you.  It is impossible to take a bad picture in Antarctica.  The colors are surprisingly varied and vibrant, it’s not just white.

If you are looking for the photography trip of a life time, Antarctica is your ticket.  While there are many places you can go for less, nothing compares to visiting the white continent. There is something magical in the quiet and stillness of the area that allows you to get your best shots.  The stunning landscapes, curious wildlife and long days allow for endless photo opportunities.

Where is your favorite place to photograph nature’s beauty?
