Ringing in the New Year with an AK-47

Ringing in the New Year with an AK-47

New Years fireworks celebration?  No thanks, I’ll take the New Years firearms celebration.

On New Years Eve we visited the Cu Chi Tunnels which was a Viet Cong center of resistance against the “American aggression”.  The Cu Chi tunnels are a 230-mile Viet Cong network of tunnels to hide from US bombings, attack US troops, and move supplies.  The system was amazingly complex with rooms, kitchens and connections in three levels up to 30 feet underground.  While extensive, the tunnels were also tiny, as the guide said, “because Americans would get stuck on their big stomachs” if they tried to enter.

At the end of the tour we decided to ring in the New Year on their shooting range. They offer a selection of firearms used in the Vietnam war including M16s, AK-47s, and M60s (really big guns).  Being in Vietnam we decided to do as the Viet Cong do and chose the AK-47.  For roughly $1 a bullet we shared the minimum 10 bullets.  Having never shot anything larger than a .22, this was a big step up, but very controllable with little kickback.  I can see why this is the resistance weapon of choice.

For the official New Year we went to the city center with what appeared to be hundreds of thousands of other people.  Combining the people with 80 degree heat created a sweaty, body odored, event.  Nonetheless, it was quite a spectacle to see and ring in the New Year.  LOCAVORista will have more on the festivities in a later post, but here are some photos.
