Singapore: World’s Best Food?

Singapore: World’s Best Food?

The food in Singapore is so good that it just might beat Hong Kong’s offerings.  It’s torture trying to choose just one dish for each meal when I want to eat at least three different dishes.  I wake up in the middle of the night craving char siew noodles and I can’t wait to get up in the morning to eat roti pratha.  My entire day is not centered around things to see, but instead what I want to eat and where to get it.

Planning your day around food in Singapore is easy, every mall has a food court with a plethora of options that could satisfy anyone.  Of course if you really want to indulge you can head to any of the hawker centers around the city.  The best part about the hawker centers and food courts, besides being cheap, is that they are safe to eat from.  Unlike other countries in South East Asia, Singapore has high food safety standards that are strictly enforced.  I have never been sick from food in Singapore and I never worry about what I put in my mouth.

Now that you don’t have to worry about getting sick or emptying your bank account, lets talk about what you should eat.  I’m going to attempt to highlight the best dishes to seek out while in Singapore, but this may turn into a laundry list.  The bottom line is, you can’t go wrong with anything on offer on the island, but the items below are the real “Singapore Food Porn Stars.”

Char kway teow | this tasty noodle dish is reminiscent of pad thai, made with thick, flat rice noodles stir-fried in dark soy sauce with prawns, eggs, beansprouts, veggies and chinese sausage.

Char siew rice or noodles | this mouth watering dish is all about the sweet, thinly sliced barbecued pork.

Duck rice or noodles | braised duck with rice or noodles and a thick dark sauce

Popiah | a paper-thin fajita of sorts, filled with your choice of delicious fillings, pork, crushed peanuts, tofu, egg, assorted veggies, etc.  The real fun is in making your own popiah.

Hainanese chicken rice | steamed chicken served with rice cooked in chicken stock, this is considered the landmark dish of Singapore and if I could only eat one thing for the duration of my stay in Singapore it might be this.

Wonton noodles | egg noodles with chicken, pork or prawn dumplings often served with a bonus of sliced barbecued pork

Roti prata | popular for breakfast, but good anytime this crispy bread with a doughy inside is enjoyed with curry

Chili crab | the king of Singapore dishes is hard shelled crabs cooked in a thick tomato and chili-based gravy, worth every penny and so delicious!

Kaya toast | another traditional breakfast dish, but often enjoyed as a snack anytime.  Kaya is a sweet coconut and egg jam that is spread over toast.

Egg tart | a cantonese pastry of yellow egg custard baked in a pastry shell

Bubble tea | not exclusively a Singaporean delight, but definitely worth seeking out while on the island.  Read my reviews of the best places to find bubble tea, by clicking here.

Curry puffs | These amazing little pockets of curry are a must-eat while in Singapore and perfect for a snack on the go.  They are also one of the least expensive things to eat on the whole island.

I’ve now let you know my favorite items to eat in Singapore, just don’t look at me for advice on what to eat first.  Enjoy the culinary delights of Singapore and let me know what your favorite dishes are.

I was already thinking it but you’ve confirmed it…Singapore will definitely be worth swinging through while in SE Asia, if nothing else at least to eat! :)

Andrea, Singapore has the best shopping and eating in SE Asia and not much else to distract you from these two things. Enjoy the food!

Dad, I know the food in Singapore might not be your thing but it is cheap and there are lots of options, missing it now in India.

Oh man, oh man, oh man! There are a few place in SEA where I am excited to visit in large part because of the food: Singapore & Hong Kong are two of them, but I’ve also heard some claims that Taiwan offers the best food in Asia… I know you guys visited there, and it sounds like Singapore reigns supreme for you, but if you needed to rank these three countries, how would you list them?

Steph, Singapore definitely reigns supreme, but the Taiwan night markets are amazing too! The food in Asia is sooooo amazing!
