Taking in Tasmania

Taking in Tasmania

Tasmania is one of the most beautiful places in the world.  Best of all, it’s beauty is easily accessible with a car, starting and ending in wonderful Hobart (find out why we fell in love with Hobart).  Cruising along gorgeous rocky coasts, wandering endless white sand beaches and frolicking through lavender fields are just some of the highlights.  Here is a sampling of the spectacular scenes you’ll see in Tasmania.

.

.

We rented the cheapest car we could find, a 1.8 liter Hyundai hatchback, but when I arrived at the rental agency all they had was the full-on Australian Holden Commodore.  This same car is sold as the Pontiac GTO/P in the USA.  It provided us a lot more space for sleeping at rest stops, but drank gas as only a GM car would.

.

.

Along the way even the roadkill is purely Australian.  Like many Wallabies, this one met its end along a roadway.  Testing our brakes we let an echidna, scary looking black snake and, of course, sheep cross our path.

.

.

Luckily we never came across these car-sized kangaroos that apparently terrorize Tasmanian streets at night.

.

.

Along the East Coast of Tasmania are beautiful beaches.  Like all of Tasmania you will never find a crowd, just a few people enjoying nature at its best.

.

.

While much of the East Coast is rocky, the scenery makes the area unforgettable.

.

.

The Bay of Fires was made famous by its smallest residents: red lichens that color the rocks.  Sunset is a great time to see the reds come alive.

.

.

The Bridestowe Estate Lavender Farm provides gorgeous views and irresistible scents for an afternoon stroll and picnic.

.

.

There are many wineries on Tasmania, but sadly they should be known for their views more than their wine if you ask me…

.

.

Along the way I found the love of my life: meat pies.  Crisp and flaky pastry encloses rich meat stews, creating a delectable meal.  After finding these along the roadside in small towns throughout Tasmania I spent the rest of my time in Australia and New Zealand seeking out the best meat pies in existence.

.

.

Crossing over to the West Coast we were greeted by one of the most spectacular sunsets of our lives.  Near Strahan we continued west until we made it to the sea, finding ourselves in awe of what we saw.

.

.

Following the coast to “downtown” Strahan we were mesmerized by the colors emerging from the falling sun.

Heading back to Hobart we crossed the center of the island, driving up to this Queenstown view, and onto the end of the Tasmanian Overland Trackl by Cradle Mountain.  Our next trip to Tasmania will be based around hiking the Overland Track, something we regret skipping on this trip.

WHEN YOU GO:

  1. Make sure you visit the MONA in Hobart.  This
  2. Virgin Blue Airpass, for as little as $90 a flight, you can fly from city to city in Australia.  We fly to Hobart from to Melbourne for $79 AUD
  3. Enjoy Hobart’s markets and restaurants by the waterfront.  Check some of them out by clicking here.

Just think of all the wonderful karma you gleaned when you gave the, albeit begrudgingly, your last and very most favorite meat pie with the hungry bikers on the great ocean road…..that should carry you for a week or two…..peace…..Bruce
