Colombia

.

Colombia has a reputation…there is no denying that it is not far removed from a terrible time.  While time may not have healed all wounds, you wouldn’t know the people were ever gripped with fear or the streets were scenes of war.  The people are friendly and happy.  The infrastructure is first-world.  If I didn’t know better, I wouldn’t believe the stories. That said, either in spite of or due to its history, Colombia offers so much that everyone should consider it for their next trip.

DON’T MISS: Salento, Cartegena, Medellin, Bogota
MUST SEE: Coffee plantations of Salento, old cities of Cartagena and Bogota and Medellin’s modern Parque Explora and Botanical Gardens

GETTING AROUND: Sure, buses are fast, safe and cheap, but at the prices of Viva Colombia flights you may want to consider taking to the sky.

OUR COST PER DAY (2 ppl): $74.04
COST OF A BEER: $2 for a 650ml big beer
KEY MONEY-SAVING TIP: Colombia is expensive compared with most of Latin America, therefore cooking and having beer at hostels will save a lot of money as bars and restaurants charge USA-like prices.

YOU NEED TO KNOW: TEXT This isn’t the violent, headline grabbing, Colombia of years past.  This is one of the most beautiful countries in South America moving forward.
IF WE KNEW WHAT WE KNOW NOW: We would have spent less time in Cartegena, Taganga and Santa Marta.  They are beautiful coastal towns, but are best for people wanting more passive travel than we do.

Colombia Highlights

Short on time? The highlight reel of our 3 week trip to Colombia including Pablo Escobar\'s brother, beaches, coffee plantations and more. Tour Colombia in 19 photos!

Bogota

Bogota is a city of surprises. Its thriving arts scene, historic architecture and modern developments are all positive surprises for a city more known for its violent past. There are seemingly endless things to do, restaurants to enjoy and neighborhoods to be discovered.

Cartagena

Cartagena\'s five-hundred year old forts, historical squares and modern beachfront hotels offer something for everyone. The contrast between the spectacular colors of the old town and the soaring skyscrapers is a sight to behold.

Salento

Colombia\'s best known legal export, coffee, originates from plantations in and around the rolling hills of Salento. Visitors can tour, sample and even work in the plantations that produce some of the world\'s favorite coffees.

Medellin and Cali

Medellin and Cali are possibly better known for the cartels that shared their names than the cities themselves. The names are synonymous with narco-trafficking and drug wars for a reason, but those days have since passed. Now the cleanliness and order of the cities are in stark contrast to generations past, or even other cities in Latin America.

Santa Fe de Antioquia

Santa Fe de Antioquia is a quaint colonial town that appears as though little has changed in its almost 500-year history. The uneven cobblestone streets lead visitors around well-preserved churches and buildings, making for a great day trip from Medellin.
