Travel Porn

Travel Porn

Pornography, it’s the fantasy world that everything is more exciting.  Everyone is better looking, nobody ever gets tired and real life inconveniences are avoidable.  In this world things are the way we want, not the way we’ve learned things actually are.  Our world is filled with diversions less extreme than pornography, but just as unrealistic.  Spend a few minutes at a magazine rack and you’ll see a barrage of houses nicer than your own, cars faster than you can imagine, models more beautiful than you’ve ever seen in real life; basically you’ll be staring at picture perfect life as it could be.

Only life isn’t like that.  While many of the things we see in magazines we don’t even want, we realize that the compromises of life don’t allow us to live in a Dwell featured house.  Travel is much the same, we roam the world looking for that perfect sunset, friendly locals that like being photographed without payment, we admire the stillness of the Ponte Vecchio and wonder why it is always so busy when we’re actually there.  We live in a world of pornography that all too often falls short of the glossy magazine world.

Sometimes though life does throw you a bone and you find yourself in a real life porn.  You look around and notice that the unrealistic travel photos you’ve seen so many times is actually your surroundings.  This has happened to us several times, when we had the time to sit back and think, wow, we’re really here.  One of the recent experiences was in Gili Trawangan, Indonesia.  We realized it as we watched the sunset from the quiet beach, beer in hand, that this was it, this was what people wander the world looking for, porn in real life.

Ringed with pristine white sand beaches, clear water and very few travelers, Gili T is paradise.  Though there are similarities to other paradises found on this trip, it’s different in its own right, being the blonde to Palawan, Philippines as the gorgeous brunette, and the petite paradise to the the curvaceous beauty of Tiger Leaping Gorge.  To each there own though, there is no way to sit on Gili T and confuse yourself that you’re anywhere but paradise.  It may not satisfy indefinitely, but for a short fling it’s just what the doctor ordered.  (Get off on more photos of the Gili Islands by clicking here.)

If what you find in Gili T isn’t enough for you, you can always try the magic mushrooms.  According to the many signs around the island you will definitely find heaven…or somewhere else…with a mushroom shake.

IF YOU GO:

  1. The slow boat is painfully slow, probably just to increase the likelihood you take the overpriced fast boat back.  While the fast boat operators claim that the fare is 600,000 IDR (~$65 USD) each way, with good negotiating on Lombok or Bali you can get it for 250,000 each way (~$28 USD), at which price it could be worth taking the fast boat.
  2. There are heaps of places to stay.  Except in the highest season you can easily find a place to stay without reservations.
  3. Generally the hotels have salt-water showers. Make sure you bring some lotion if you plan an extended stay as the lack of fresh water dries skin pretty quick.

Dad, our trip reminds us everyday that it’s about the journey not the destination- we’re just trying to keep it all in perspective…
