Vietnamese Sweets

Vietnamese Sweets

I have never had a huge sweet tooth, but when I travel I always enjoy trying new sweet treats.  It’s fun to see what each country considers to be dessert.  In Vietnam dessert is offered up at street stalls just the same way all their food is sold.  The only difference is, you will only find dessert vendors in the evening, so don’t expect to have sweet treat after lunch- you’ll have to wait until after dinner.

The one treat you are able to get after lunch is donuts.  The donuts are not sold as street food, rather there are entire stores dedicated to every type of donut you can imagine.  A donut will set you back about 50 cents maybe 75 cents depending on what type of donut you choose.

We almost got the Fruity Pebbles donut just to see what it tasted like.

Our donut choices were tiramisu and chocolate sprinkles, both great choices.  Vietnamese donuts have a wonderful light bread texture, but are  not too sweet.  The sweetness comes from the frosting and toppings.  The tiramisu flavor didn’t really wow us, but I would still recommend grabbing a donut while in Vienam.

As with the regular food we found the best desserts for the most affordable price were offered on the street, but again only at night.  One of thinkCHUA’s favorite foods is Flan and so when he saw a street vendor selling it for only 25 cents  he had to get one.  The flan was delicious, however they prepare it with coffee on top and ice.  Once we dumped out the ice it was the perfect evening treat, creamy and flavorful.

Definitely our favorite Vietnamese treat is the sweet sticky rice, which we stumbled upon one night thinking we were ordering a savory rice dinner only to find it was very sweet.  Vendors come out at night with carts filled with brightly covered rice and many different toppings.  You simply choose what kind of rice you would like, some rice is plane, there was black rice and then rice with small beans in it.  Once you choose the rice it seems that the toppings are already chosen for you.  Each dessert comes with toasted sesame seeds, sugar and dried coconut.  We loved this dessert and wish they offered it more than just in the evening.

We love sweets! Ironic, we are diabetes doctors.

LOCAVORista Reply:

Hannah’s Mom and Dad, how about sweets with carbs (sweet rice) that can’t be good for us, but in small doses it should be fine and with all the walking we figure we’re in the clear.

Be careful with what you do with those donuts,
I made my fortune selling breast implants,
and I now sell potatoes!

P.S. That Corvette on your web site looks sweet,
how would that look at the Ply farmers market
behind the guy selling the honey? I Like the automatic
crash response for 6 months, what do you do after 6 months?

LOCAVORista Reply:

Yeah, maybe the donuts were going too far, but we couldn’t resist. You understand, you’ve met us both before. I hope that planning for potato season is going well.
